Book Fair Ends Nov. 1!

The book fair is in its final week!!  Students have been enjoying visiting the library and shopping.  Currently we have reached 25% of our goal of $2880 in sales!  Thanks to those who have made purchases.  Funds raised will be used to buy more books for the library, and to donate books to the angel tree during the holidays.  If you would like to shop the online book fair for convenience, additional titles and teacher’s wish lists, the link is available through October 31.  Just click below:

Skyview students’ requirement of daily reading logs keeps our library books moving off the shelves.  Students may read books of any reading level but are required to test on one that is in their Lexile range.  Lexile scores are given to books based on their readability.  Skyview’s Homework Help page contains a link to Scholastic’s quiz search engine.

October in your library

Welcome to another year at SMS!  One of my new resolutions includes frequent posting on our library blog.  To begin with, I’ve just finished reading Jessica Watson’s book True Spirit.  Her exciting adventure begins and ends in Australia.  Sixteen-year-old Jessica traveled solo around the world in her S&S 34 foot sailboat.  Her story fueled my own new found interest in sailing!  After spending three days on the water, I’m already rereading her book and finding I understand the lingo so much better.  Be sure to add a biography to your reading list this year.  Inspiration abounds on our library shelves.true-spirit anne-sailing

2016 Battle of the Books

Skyview’s Battle of the Books team is meeting this week.  We’ll kick off the season with book trailers and a little competition between grades.  To practice titles and authors, visit my Quizlet page and spend some time racing the clock.  Ready to select your next novel?  Trailers are a great way to catch a quick glimpse of your next adventure.

Ready for another great adventure?

ruins of gorlanThis fall I read Ruins of Gorlan by John Flanagan, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a new adventure.  The story takes place in medieval times of castles and knights with a few fantastical creatures thrown in for excitement.  The book has reader appeal for both boys and girls.  A story of friendship, hardship and overcoming obstacles, Ruins of Gorlan is Lord of the Rings for middle schoolers.

Looking for something new?

February conferences brought another Scholastic Book Fair as well as Overdrive eBook training.  As more students become comfortable with the convenience of digital literature many are logging in and checking out eBooks from our KPBSD collection.  For information on how to download an Overdrive app and locate our library collection, stop by the library for a quick “how to” with Ms. McCabe.

Looking for a good recommendation for what to read next?  Our front display case features our most checked out books.  Swing by to discover what SMS students are reading these days.

Welcome!

Welcome to the new Skyview Middle School library.  Here you’ll find thousands of books including the most popular and recently released young adult titles. We also subscribe to 16 different magazines for your enjoyment and to keep you current with events happening around the world.

I am your librarian, Ms. McCabe.  As a certified teacher with highly qualified status in middle school math and science, I am one of your greatest resouces here at SMS.  Please come see me for assistance with all things literature related as well as help with homework assignments and special projects.  Your library has access to art materials and school supplies for student use as well.

Our library is open to students before school, during lunch breaks and after school.  Feel free to drop by between classes to return books as well.  The library is equipped with 28 computers for use by our student body making it the ideal location to gather in the morning to check email and Powerschool.  Our tables provide ample space to finish homework.  SMS also has WiFi available and the library is the only location students are encouraged to use personal electronic devices.
